Our client, Teck Resources Ltd, is a leading Canadian resource company focused on responsibly providing the metals essential for global development and the energy transition while caring for the people, communities and land that we love.

Teck’s two regional business units, North America and Latin America, oversee Teck’s assets through all phases of safe, sustainable development, operation and closure. The business units are supported by enterprise-wide functions that set strategic direction, establish standards and provide governance, as well as supporting the business through shared services, centres of excellence and business partnering.

Reporting to the Vice President, Legal, the Corporate Counsel, Projects will work closely with members of Teck’s project development group and commercial teams, as well as other members of the legal group to provide timely and useful legal advice and services in support of Teck’s business, including its expanding project portfolio. The successful candidate will work with Teck teams in Canada as well at its foreign projects and operations.

The preferred candidate will have a primary background in projects or commercial matters focused on construction and infrastructure management, project development arrangements, and dispute resolution in addition to general corporate/commercial experience, preferably with exposure to the natural resources industry. Strong technical and drafting skills, as well as commercial acumen are required.

Responsibilities:

• Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
• Serve as the primary legal partner for the Project Development developing collaborative business relationships that drives value and mitigates risks
• Provide advice and guidance for all aspects of engineering, consulting, construction and project contracting including:
– Advising on tender and procurement documents
– Drafting and negotiating professional services and construction contracts
– Overseeing or managing claims or related dispute processes• Lead and develop a Legal Advisor supporting projects activities by organizing work and providing opportunities for assignments that leverages skills, promotes learning and grows capabilities
• Provide transactional and policy-based legal advice and services to the company’s business units on other commercial matters
• Develop and improve business processes and procedures
• Perform General corporate counsel work at the corporate level
• Manage outside counsel on a variety of matters

Qualifications:

• Minimum six years’ experience as a legal practitioner is required
• Member of the BC Bar or eligible to become a member is required
• Strong drafting skills and commercial acumen is required
• Strong background in construction and project development commercial matters with ability to address a wide variety of commercial and corporate matters is required
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to collaborate with a wide range of customers as part of a multidisciplinary and multijurisdictional team is required
• Experience working on natural resources projects (preferably mining) is strongly preferred

Salary Range: $170,000 – $215,000 per annum.

The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
