Huu-ay-aht First Nations
Huu-ay-aht First Nations is a self-governing modern treaty Nation located on the west coast of Vancouver Island. With a vision of strong governance, self-reliance, and stewardship of traditional territory, Huu-ay-aht is committed to advancing the well-being of its citizens and the implementation of the Maa-nulth Final Agreement.
In support of this vision, Huu-ay-aht is seeking an In-House Legal Counsel to join its Government Law & Treaty Implementation Department. Reporting to the Executive Director, the In-House Legal Counsel will serve as the key legal advisor to the Nation, providing practical and strategic advice to Executive Council, senior leadership, and departments across a wide range of legal matters. Working in collaboration with the Law Clerk and external counsel when required, this role supports the Nation’s legal, legislative, and governance needs.
The successful candidate will advise on the interpretation and application of Huu-ay-aht laws and the Maa-nulth Final Agreement, and will assist in the drafting and revision of Acts and Regulations. They will contribute to the development of policies, briefing materials, and resolutions, and will represent or support the Nation in legal proceedings. This role also includes managing litigation, overseeing contracts and agreements, reviewing internal policies, and providing legal risk analysis and training. Candidates will bring a strong foundation in corporate or public law, with the ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly to a diverse audience. Experience in Aboriginal law or Indigenous governance is considered an asset.
The ideal candidate will have 5 to 9 years of post-call experience and be a member in good standing with a Canadian law society. They will be a strong communicator, comfortable in a hybrid role that includes both remote and on-site work at offices in Port Alberni and Anacla. The ability to work independently while engaging collaboratively with internal and external partners is essential. Applicants should be highly organized, self-initiated, team-oriented, and possess strong administrative and communication skills.
Compensation: $150,000 – $160,000 per annum.
